So, where was I? Oh yes, the escort. Once the barricade had been moved just enough for us to squeeze through, Marvin’s cousin, Jeff I think, and a couple of other guys pulled in front of and behind us in old pick up trucks. We looked like some kind of odd vintage truck parade. It only took about fifteen minutes to get to a second barricade, which was moved aside as well. After pulling through, we stopped and Owen and Marvin got out again. This time we could hear some of what they were saying.

Apparently, the area between us and our destination had a small but sketchy neighborhood in it, and since the power went out, they’re hadn’t been any traffic come through. Of course, that could be because Carlton and the surrounding area was so isolated that no one had any need to come up to Jackson, who knows? There unfortunately wasn’t any way around it, though Jeff tried to reassure us that the gangs were mostly only active at night. I don’t know about everybody else, but I wasn’t reassured.

The difference was almost immediate. There wasn’t a single building that didn’t have broken windows and graffiti covered walls. All the cars seem to have been set on fire, and were now burned out shells. Maybe they were cold? More likely they just liked to burn things. The streets were eerily empty, and I was very aware of just how much noise our truck was making.

Believe it or not, we almost made it out without any interaction. We were coming up on the railroad tracks, which Jeff had told us was the southern border of their territory, when I saw the movement up ahead. I knocked on the window and pointed when Betty turned to look. I could see her relaying the info to Owen, and his terse nod in response. About that time I saw more movement, on both sides of the road, and decided I had to do something.

I told the kids to get down as low as possible, it’s a good thing they’re so young and flexible, as they were able to almost fold in half. I, however, had no chance in hell of achieving that. Since there was no way I could get low enough to do any good, I took one of the boy’s rifles, checked to make sure it was loaded, removed the safety, and aimed it in the direction of the closest movement. I figured it couldn’t hurt for them to see a gun.

Glancing in the front seat, I saw Marvin lowering his window and readying the shotgun. At least we were on the same page. As we drew closer, I the movement closest to me materialized into the form of a young man holding a pistol that he was beginning to raise. I didn’t have a lot of time to think about what I was doing, and all I could think is that he was trying to shoot at us or the tires.
